Insect olfactometers are used to study insect's responses to various natural or artificial cues. The Natural cues are studied to understand insect preferences, responses, and rejections to various natural interactions that takes place in nature. For example insect response to the presence of predators, their response to damaged plant parts, responses to various chemicals (volatiles) present in plants parts etc. Similar studies can also be conducted on artificial cues that are synthesised. 2 choice, 3 choice, 4, choice, or 6-8 choices olfactometers can be fabricated. WHO recommended olfactometers to study mosquito repellency are also available.
